Allergic Infections

Image

Your immune system is responsible for defending the body against bacteria and viruses. In some cases, your immune system will defend against substances that typically don’t pose a threat to the human body.

Some of these substances are known as allergens, and when your body reacts to them, it causes an allergic reaction. You can have an allergic reaction after inhaling, eating, or touching an allergen.

Causes of allergies:

Allergies occur when the immune system mistakes a harmless substance, such as pollen, for an invader.

The immune system overreacts to the substance, which is also known as an allergen, by producing antibodies.

Diagnosis:

Skin test - Your skin will be pricked with small amounts of the proteins found in common allergens. If you're allergic, you'll likely develop a raised bump (hive) at the test location on your skin.

Blood test - A blood sample is sent to a medical laboratory, where it can be tested for evidence of sensitivity to possible allergens.

When to contact a doctor:

A person should consult a doctor if they experience persistent allergy symptoms that do not ease with OTC treatments or that interfere with carrying out their daily tasks.
